Innovation Fund Open Call: Resist and Rebuild

by: | Feb 01, 2017

We are excited to announce the 6th Open Call for the New Media Ventures Innovation Fund!

New Media Ventures is a seed fund and network of investors and donors financing media and technology startups that build advocacy movements, create new narratives and drive civic engagement. Over the past 6 years, we have financed such powerful social change startups as Upworthy, responsible for making social good content go viral, and SumOfUs, a 10 million member movement for corporate accountability.

The New Media Ventures Innovation Fund finances early-stage, for-profit and nonprofit startups with $50K, participation in NMV’s startup support program and access to NMV’s network of angel investors.

The deadline for applications is Friday March 3, 2017 at 5 pm PT. EXTENDED UNTIL SUNDAY EVENING, MARCH 5, 2017.

*The deadline for the current open call, Shift the Story, is Friday, February 2, 2018 at 11:59pm.

This election has challenged all of us to do more, and we want to help create the future we want to live in. We are particularly interested in the intersection of media, technology, civic engagement and advocacy, where innovation can have an incredible impact. We’re thinking about how to make media work better for our democracy and technology issues that will impact social justice.

During this Open Call, we are looking for companies and organizations working to resist fear, lies and hate as well as those focused on rebuilding, and using this unprecedented moment of citizen mobilization to shape a better future. We are particularly interested in projects in the following categories:

  1. Organizing newly politicized people. This could include organizations that are effectively blending national reach via digital tools with local impact via on-the-ground organizing but also best-in-class technology that can help organizations do that work.
  2. Building better media. We are looking for ways to burst filter bubbles, fight fake news and dark influence. We also want to hear about new business models that reward quality and engagement, solutions that elevate new voices with more diverse perspectives, and creative distribution strategies.

Map of election resultsOn this Presidential inauguration day, we’re thinking a lot about the challenges in store for us in 2017. Over the next months and years, our focus will be to resist but also to rebuild, by helping to create the future we want to live in. We will be particularly focused at the intersection of media, technology, civic engagement and advocacy, where innovation can have an incredible impact. We’re thinking about how to make media work better for our democracy and look forward to your perspective to help sharpen our thinking.

We’re getting straight to work, and hope you’ll join us! We will be issuing the next Innovation Fund Open Call on Feb 1. During this Open Call, we will look for ways to burst filter bubbles, fight fake news and dark influence, seamlessly bring people together online and in-person to take action, and more.

Entrepreneurs Want to pitch us for funding? This blog post outlines the types of projects we fund and don’t fund. Sign up for our newsletter, and you’ll get the announcement as soon as it goes out.

Investors We’re bringing together a select group of funders to sponsor this upcoming Open Call to help fund more groups than we otherwise would be able to. Let us know if you’re interested in making a 501c3 contribution to the Innovation Fund. We also encourage you to apply to join the Screening Committee – it’s an amazing opportunity to get a bird’s eye view of promising innovation, as well as sharpen your diligence skills in collaboration with other funders.

Community We will be expanding our startup advisor network in 2017. If you’re interested in helping the entrepreneurs in our portfolio succeed, email with a bit of information about yourself and your interests.

In 2016, we accomplished great things together. We added 10 startups to our portfolio in April and September, mobilized almost $3m in funding towards entrepreneurs and celebrated 3 exits: Crowdtangle, and tinyGive. We expanded our work bringing together our community of investors and entrepreneurs, most recently during a Virtual Demo Day to showcase the work of our latest cohort of entrepreneurs. Check-out the recording below and let us know if you’d like to learn more!

Finally, in 2016, we published our first ever white-paper on business models for mission-driven organizations which was downloaded more than 1000 times. We’re currently teeing up our next paper on financing pathways for impact organizations. Email if you would like to be interviewed on this topic.

With your partnership, we’re looking forward to expanding our work in 2017! Happy New Year.
